US Moose hunting in Canada without an outfitter/guide
I was going over the 2005 Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) Hunting Regulations, specifically in reference to a 28 acres property we have near the Prarie River and a 300 acres property on Long Lake. These properties are in the what is known as Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) 21A which extends from Nipigon to the Pic River, then North from Lake Superior to HWY 11. At close examination of the Hunting Regulations, it appeared that there is an open moose season for non-residents.
I called the MNR office in Nipigon to verify and they confirmed that there is in fact a season. In 2006, it will be from October 9th to November 14th. In this area non-residents can hunt moose without and outfitter or guide as per the MNR Huting Regualtion Guide for 2005 states: “Non-residents who are owners of land in a WMU that has an open season for non-residents and wish to hunt in that unit, may apply for a calf validation tag from the MNR office responsible for the WMU. (Non-resident landowners are not eligible to apply in the resident moose draw for an adult validation tag.) Non-residents who qualify under this exception and wish to apply for a calf validation tag must purchase a moose licence and, prior to the hunt, submit their application along with proof of property ownership to the District MNR office responsible for the WMU.” - 2005 MNR Hunting Regs. page 44. Also see Page 48 (note that there is no asterix or plus sign beside 21A).
There is also a black bear season for non-residents
, however there is no deer season.
So for all you moose hunters looking to get your moose this year, pick up a piece of land in WMU 21A and put your name in for the moose draw. And if you are looking for property to build a hunt camp, check out these two awesome properties.
