This is a sleepy little hamlet that’s full of life. There’s an outdoor hockey rink for the kids. There’s a playground for the small kids. You can get around on a snowmobile or just walk around.
There is all kinds of mining exploration going on around Holtyre.
There’s even an open pit gold mine not far from here and another soon to be established.
A LITTLE HISTORY
Holtyre began as a mining town during the early 1930’s when gold was discovered within the area. The name Holtyre was derived from the name of two Timmins area mines - the Hollinger and Macintyre. Ross Mine is located in the Northern Ontario town of Holtyre.
Ross Mine began as a subsidiary operation of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd. The mine had a 3375 foot deep shaft and extracted gold, silver and copper ore beginning in the year 1938. The ore was smeltered on site. Operations at the Ross mine stopped on November 15, 1989
As Holtyre grew, the town expanded to include two stores, a hotel, bowling alley and two schools (English and French).
At it's prime, the Ross mine employed between 375-400 people. In 1975 the operation was taken over by Pamour Porcupine Mines. Pamour decided to ship its ore out to their Timmins area smelter as a cost saving measure. The company decided to burn the old smelter down rather than dismantle it. It has been said that during the burning of the smelter, pools of gold were discovered that had accumulated from gold dust in the air.
HOLTYRE TODAY Today the town contains one very small store and numerous abandoned houses. There is a small population that lives in this town. The mine sits much like it did when it closed. Paperwork can be found in filing cabinets, shelves are full of equipment and all the machinery is still in place.
The nearby St. Andrews Goldmine Hislop mine project is very close to Holtyre. Ore mining activities at the Hislop Project commenced in March 2010. Another mining project is also starting nearby in 2011.
It is anticipated that with all the mining activity nearby and surrounding Holtyre, demand for serviced lots and new housing will be high.
