The Township of Red Rock is located at the end of Highway 628, 8 kilometers from the junction with Highway 11/17. Red Rock is lOO km east of Thunder Bay. The population is 1278.
The Township of Red Rock has a district high school serving the communities of Nipigon, Dorion, Hurkett & Lake Helen Mission. Red Rock Public & St. Hilary's Catholic elementary schools also serve the community.
The community is served by two churches. St. Hilary's Catholic & St. Peter's United/Anglican. From these come the Catholic & United Women's Leagues and Knight's of Columbus.
The historic Red Rock Inn has recently undergone a major restoration and now serves as a four season hotel/convention center. Red Rock maintains a full service, 50 slip marina and park on the waterfront of Nipigon Bay. An 8 km hiking trail has been completed over the mountain to Nipigon offering panoramic views of Lake Superior. The Nipigon-Red Rock Golf Club is located midway between the two towns.
The township supports a major recreation complex containing a 3 sheet curling club, Lakeside Cafe, arena, bowling alley, senior's club, weight room, swimming pool, gymnasium and meeting rooms.
The major backbone of any community is it's volunteer organizations of which Red Rock has many. A 26 member volunteer fire department and a volunteer ambulance service highlight the list. As well we have minor hockey, curling, bowling, figure skating, senior's, Lion's, Rotary, slow pitch, little league, fish & game, badminton, and craft clubs.
Red Rock offers some really spectacular sights of mighty Lake Superior.
Traveling east along highway 11/17, you will discover the friendly town of Red Rock by the Bay. Red Rock is hometown to Heather Houston, World Curling Champion. Check out Pull-a-Log Park at the Lake Superior Marina; bring a picnic and fish offshore. If you happen to be in the area the second weekend of August, make sure you stay for folk music at the popular Live from the Rock Annual Folk Festival.
There are many nature-based activities in the area. Nearby Ouimet Canyon , with a 350 feet vertical rock wall, is one of nature's raw masterpieces. On the canyon floor, hidden in the shadows, you’ll discover plants that are native to the Artic tundra. Hiking trails lead to observation decks at the edge of the canyon.
You can visit one of the many amethyst mines or go rock hunting for these semiprecious crystals. Or drop in at one of the many artisans in the area and discover some truly wonderful creations made with these reddish violet to pale lilac stones.
Don’t forget to bring your fishing gear. FISH Lake Superior, any of the area’s rivers and streams AND you are never far from some good inland lakes !
Naturalists will enjoy the opportunities to observe peregrine falcons, bald eagles, blue herons and a variety of waterfowl in their natural surroundings along the Nipigon River Recreation Trail.
Red Rock is also along the TOPS (Trans-Ontario Provincial Snowmobile) trail. After a long day’s ride, plan to spend an evening at the Red Rock Inn, cozying up to a warm fire, good food and close friends. Maybe throw in a little snowshoeing or cross country skiing or even try your hand at some ice climbing.
In February, Red Rock comes alive with their annual winter carnival.
Lake Superior is the largest of the five Great Lakes and is also the largest freshwater lake in the entire world, with a surface area of 82,000 sq km (32,000 sq mi). The lake seperates the province of Ontario and the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. The lake is fed by over 200 rivers and the Sault Locks at Sault Ste. Marie allow ships to travel between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes.
